The Economic Development Department for the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah performs the day to day operation as directed by the Tribal Council, creating an environment where members of the Tribe can obtain access to information they need to compete in the modern business market. Tribal reservation land maps and records are accessible. Community development strategies and plans are updated. Information on water rights, labor markets, transportation services, population, real estate markets, venture capital, and business is provided.
The Director of Economic Development serves at the direction of the Tribal Council as the liaison for area planning councils with federal, state, county, and city governments. Knowledge of ongoing plans and projects by outside entities helps coordinate efforts and avoid duplication of work.
The department is dedicated to the goal of providing economic opportunity such that tribal members might have the opportunity to live on reservation land and work with the Tribe for the preservation of Paiute culture and Tribal autonomy.
Current Projects
The economic development department is currently assisting the Tribal Council and the Bands to
negotiate an agreement with the State of Utah on the quantification and adjudication of water rights.
Recent discussion with geothermal development companies has resulted in the signing of a resolution which will enable the construction of a geothermal plant on reservation land in the Cove Fort area. Additional interest in land on the Shivwits reservation and in western Beaver County land may lead to more geothermal projects there.
The Tribe continues to pursue acquisition of additional land and water to increase the opportunities of the Tribe and the Bands in agricultural and economic expansion and employment for tribal members.
Commercial development plans are being considered at various locations, including convenience stores, service stations, gift shops, restaurants, hotels, and cultural centers.
The department recently assisted the Shivwits Band to be included in a bill granting the Band 640 acres of additional land in Washington County. The bill passed the Senate and is currently being reviewed by the House. Approval is expected sometime in Feb. 2009.
